Here are some examples of asset classes:

  • U.S. stocks (or equities): A stock is an ownership in a company; mutual funds invest in stock from many different companies.  For example, a large cap blended fund may own companies such as Amazon, GM, General Electric, Apple, Walmart, Microsoft, and more.
  • Bonds:  Bonds are a debt instrument.  If you purchase a bond, it would be similar to a bank selling a mortgage.   It is a debt that needs to be paid back with interest.  The amount of interest is set at the beginning, as is the time period.  For example, you could purchase a 5-year treasury bond or an education bond that matures in 20 years.  On the expiration date, you receive the amount of the bond plus interest.
  • Cash or its equivalents:   Cash typically only has inflation-risk; it is considered a stable investment.  In the HCA retirement account Plan, you have the Interest Income Fund, which may be viewed as a cash equivalent.  While the Interest Income Fund is not FDIC insured and is not guaranteed against loss, it is considered a "low-risk" selection. Part of its objective is to provide a reasonably stable return with reduced risk to the principal.
  • Commodities: These include oil, precious metals, coffee, grains, or livestock, to name a few.
  • Real Estate: This can be the physical ownership of a property or investments that specifically target real estate.
  • Currency:  Currency includes domestic, foreign, and cryptocurrencies.
  • Global or International:  These can be stocks or bonds of overseas companies or companies within the U.S. that offer their products in other countries.   The world has become an increasingly more global market over the last 60 years.
  • Money Market:  A money market account is an interest-bearing account at a bank or credit union. Most money market accounts pay a higher interest rate than regular passbook savings accounts.

It is essential to diversify your investments and avoid putting all of your account assets into any one of these categories.
